North Otago saved their best for the last two matches of the season – the Lochore Cup playoffs – and walked away with the trophy. But prior to that, only two of their eight round-robin matches were won in finishing eighth.

There were 14 debutants in the 33 players used. Missing from last year were Ben Palmer, Cameron Keenan and John Kelly, all playing in England, while Palenapa Mafi had retired, and Inoke Naufahu and Manulua Taiti were injured.

In the forwards, flanker Matt Duff impressed, after initially missing selection in the squad, while Jared Whitburn played well in the troublesome locking position. Loose forward Filipo Veamatahau was another to improve on last year. The experienced Ralph Darling continued to serve his union well at loosehead prop, while ex—King Country rep Dan Towler was ever present on the other side of the front row. Last year’s South Canterbury rep Sione Vea was an excellent acquisition on loan at hooker, but unfortunately concussion ended his stint before the end of the campaign.

The backline was a very settled unit with only injury dictating a player missing a game or two.

Former first-class first-class cricketer Craig Smith debuted at fullback, while brother Robert, returned from a stint in England, shone at halfback, varying his play well as playmaker. Loan player Josh Casey was top points scorer at first five-eighth including three tries. Matthew Vocea and Simon Lilicama made the most of their opportunities on the wing, scoring six and seven tries respectively. The 19-year-old Lilicama was still at St Kevin’s College and also played for Athletic Marist senior team on Saturday’s, being the top try scorer in the Citizen Shield. The dependable Lemi Masoe was at second five-eighth and loan player Shae Tucker shone on attack at centre.

Higher honours went to:

New Zealand Heartland: R.K. Darling, L. Masoe
